Here A Ziploc - There A Ziploc

A public service announcement for my faithful readers, all 2 of you...you might want to buy stock in ziploc baggies this week. After my last 2 trips to Target I am sure they will be valued higher in the next quarter postings.

I now own every single ziploc size known to man. I have zipper locks, slider locks, and old fashioned squish together locks. Some of my ziploc baggies even have Scooby Doo on them. Nothing like a Scooby Snack to brighten a girl's day, I always say.

Everything that we will be taking to China will be prepackaged in a ziploc and labeled with a Sharpie marker. What am I doing? I'm obsessed. I have ziploc disorder. I caught myself fantasizing in the check out lane that perhaps I could wrap Ava in a ziploc bag on the plane and then let her out in Beijing. (I could save on Airborne that way.) And this made me chuckle, out loud, at myself. I can be very easy to entertain.

When I looked at this...

I really had to question my own personal sanity level. What is the deal with the 18,000 ziploc baggies? I honestly have no idea why I have felt the need to stuff every single item that will be making the trip into a plastic baggie. But let me tell you if my plane goes down like the Titanic, I won't be needing a personal flotation device. I think that that diapers double wrapped in the new 2 gallon size might keep me a float until help arrives.

I've also doubled up on Wet Ones. Normally I am not a germ-a-phobe type of person. I have germ-a-phoby friends, and you know who you are, but I usually subscribe to the "You eat a pound of dirt a year anyway, so why worry?" school of thought. It is not uncommon for my kid to be eating at the table only to realize that she has kid dirt smeared all over her sandwich, we take in in stride. However, all bets are off when taking a 4 year old and a 9 month old around the world in 80 days. Which is the new rumor stating how long we will have to shop till we drop on Shaiman Island for anyone following Rumor Queen.

Go ahead and look for me walking up and down the streets of Guangzhou in a few weeks. I will be the one wiping my kid's hands and popping the used Wet Ones in a semi-used ziploc bag then looking for the nearest Chinese landfill to make a deposit.

And I wonder why people of different nations sometimes roll their eyes at American weirdos. Go figure.

For trip #1, I bought one of those bags where you can hook it up to a vacuum and cause items to get compressed. Sweet!

Except.

Most of them leaked and re-inflated themselves. Second, once you open them up in China, how are you going to re-compress them? Need to chase down a cleaning lady for that. In Mandarin, no less.

But, you can't have too many ziplocs in China.

I, Susan, packed in Ziploc baggies (and the packmates that don't need a vacuum (2 c's or 2 u's?)) Anyway, we were the only family who had our money broken out into the snack size/dollar bill size baggies broken down by fee (orphanage, medical, tips, etc.) Came in super duper handy when it was time to shell out some cash. Grab a baggie and go. Kid clothes: Baggied together so as to not have to search but so hard for an awesomely cute frock with its matching socks.

I'm so glad more of you exist out there.

I do store the things that can leak on a plane in ziplock...

Ziplocs were GREAT! Make sure you pack empty ones every time you go down to breakfast, and bring them back full of snacks for later in the day!!

P/S You have 17 bloglines subscribers, that's quite a bit more then 2!~

Oh yeah, I believe in the goodness that is Ziplocs, preferably the slider type. I did NOT know, however, that they come with that lined writing area. I think I need to go shopping ;)

I do, however, already own the packmate bags. I am going to have very particular packing challenges, and will have to squeeze every centimeter that I can into my suitcases. I actually transported a twin size, very fluffy, down comforter in a packmate bag to deliver to my sister who had moved. Couldn't quite close the bag (and it took me and another sister 10 minutes to stuff the whole thing in the packmate bag), but it only took up about a 1/3 of my suitecase after that, not 3/4 of it. Packmates are grrrrrreat!

Love the packing. You did a great job.

Johnny said what I've always thought "how do you vac-pack when you get to China?"!!! Slip the maid a fiver?!!

You make me laugh! I think its hilarious that you're packing in plastic! I guess your gear will be really fresh?!!

PS I'll keep you posted on my packing weirdness (it'll be about 2009, the way things are going!)

Zips are one of the best things in life! I'm a retired RN and everything in the hospital came in zips I saved them all and reused them. The snack idea is great too. I keep snacks and crayons etc. in zips in my car for the grandkids. God speed you on your trip.
